Star Trek Movie Review

Okay.
Before I start this review, I have to come clean.

I am a Trekkie.
Not necessarily an über hard-core Trekkie that will love anything from the franchise blindly; I did not like the last ST:TNG (for those of you not in the know, that stands for Star Trek: The Next Generation) movie, Nemesis; It was awful on so many levels.

But I am enough of a Trekkie to have an original, licensed costume (which I actually wore to the first ever Sci-Fi convention in the Philippines), a Medical Tri-corder and a model of the Enterprise - D, both with sound effects and flashing lights, not to mention a communicator pin, about 15 action figures, and a 12 inch Geordi doll.

Yes, I'm *that* kind of a fan... Bias is to be expected.

Having said that, I loved the move.

I think it was executed really, really well. It was novice-friendly enough to keep the "common person" interested and yet fans will enjoy the inside jokes and seeing new life breathed into old "friends"; especially Spock.
Since ST:TOS (Star Trek: The Original Series) was before my time, I don't have the same passion for it as I do my two favorites, TNG & Voyager, or even Enterprise, so the little tweaks they made to the story didn't bother me at all; though I'm sure there are many a purist out there who was NOT happy to see Spock & Uhura lock lips - very passionately, i might add.
I loved that they sucked all the cheesiness out of the show (which had quite the propensity to cheesiness) and turned the action, adventure, and humor up a notch.
I also especially loved that Majel Barrett-Roddenberry was able to provide the voice of the computer one last time. Majel Roddenberry was not only the wife of Star Trek's creator, Gene Roddenberry, but she has also been the voice of the computer from the very beginning; from TOS all the way through to Enterprise. She died just 8 days after recording her part. She never got to see the finished product because she died in December, 2008. Any Star Trek movie would not be right without her as the computer's voice. She is the only "character/actor" to be in every single Star Trek incarnation: series, or movie, live action or animated.

Another thing I really loved was the score. The soundtrack of the movie is excellent. I am most definitely going to buy the album the first chance I get. The music that plays when the Romulan ships appear - fantastic!

The one thing that I did not like was the casting of Winona Ryder as Spock's mother. What the heck were they thinking??? It was just so, so, so wrong.

If you haven't already seen the film, go out and do so. I promise you, its a really good movie.
If you already have, then watch it again :)

Live long, and prosper.
